Torrevieja Electricians

Surge protectors are required by law in Spain. However, rather than regarding them as just another expense, think of them as a cheap insurance policy. It’s surprising the amount of home owners that have home content insurance and think, oh well all my electrical equipment is covered so there’s no need to have a surge protector installed. Yes, that may be the fact but do you really want the hassle of waiting for an insurance claim assessment then having to buy new appliances and equipment. Damage from a power surge or ‘spike’ as they’re sometimes referred to can be even more devastating if you lose important data or files on your computer.

Electric Surge Protectors

Spain is no stranger to power surges, in fact they happen on a regular basis. No area of the country is exempt as they can occur anywhere without warning. The same applies to premises regardless of whether it’s a private home, office, commercial building or large factory. Just remember, if any electrical equipment in your property gets damaged due to you not having a surge protector, the Electrical Supply Authority (Iberdrola) will not be liable.

How Power Surges Occur

Power surges can damage electrical equipment when there is a sudden increase in voltage. In the case of computers and laptops they can destroy your hard drive. In fact any electrical equipment with a printed circuit board (PCB) is in danger from a power surge. Aside from small transient surges that can occur daily from home appliances, there are two main reasons for power surges. One is lightning, and unfortunately any cable that enters your home acts as a convenient conductor for lightning strikes. The other is when powerful electric motors kick in when the electric supply network is switched on. Neither of these show any mercy to electrics.

How Surge Protectors Work

Surge protectors are rather a simple device, but as I mentioned earlier, one of the cheapest insurance policies you could invest in. A surge protection device connects to your entire electrical installation, therefore protecting any equipment or appliance running off it. What the device does is detect a power surge and blocks or disconnects your electricity supply before the surge enters your home. Although every home or business should have a surge protector, some properties are more at risk than others. One such example are remote rural areas that use solar energy systems. Being more exposed to the elements, these areas have a high risk of lightning.
