Digital smart meter or ICP installations create a form of control for your electrical system. One or the other are required by regulation in all properties. Both units regulate your electrical use in the home. The digital smart meter is the new replacement for your regular electric meter and has a built in ICP unit. An ICP unit on its own is a switch installed in your fuse board. This needs to be in a lockable section of the fuse board or in a separate sealed unit.

Smart Meter or ICP Installations

Digital Smart Meter – This replaces your old electric meter and incorporates an ICP switch in the unit. The smart meter functions the same way as your old meter although they are more accurate. It measures the the amount of electricity used in the home throughout the day and night. When installed, the electrician uses the digital function to set the unit to correspond to the property’s Contract Potencia (Electrical Contract). The built in ICP switch is designed to cut off your electricity supply should it exceed your agreed contracted Potencia. The smart meter also eliminates estimated bills as it enables Iberdrola to read your meter from their stations.

ICP Switch – The ICP (Interutor Controla Potencia) works alongside your original electrical meter. It is designed in a sealed unit or installed in a lockable part of the fuse box to avoid any tampering. While your original electric meter is there to record your usage, the IPC’s function is to cut off the electrical supply once your limit is exceeded. Therefore, it’s important that the size of your ICP switch is in line with your contracted Potencia. It is also important to select the correct Potencia for your household’s use. If too low your electric will keep tripping. If too high you will be paying for more electricity than you’re actually using. ICP switches can easily be upgraded if you are adding extra electrical appliances and require more electricity but would require a boletin.
